System Development Manager, Controls & Systems Engineering

The Mechatronics team builds full-stack innovations that ensure safety, speed, optimization, sustainability and value across our fulfillment and delivery network. We are a global organization, with research and development laboratories in Hamme (Belgium), Boston (USA) and Milan (Italy). Our development portfolio focuses on automation solutions in the areas of packaging, labeling, sorting and material transport. In our laboratory in Hamme (BE), we develop and build groundbreaking mechatronic solutions that improve the efficiency and sustainability that customers have come to expect from Amazon's retail business.

The Automation team in Hamme is seeking a Manager to oversee a team of System Development (Controls) Engineers and act as a liaison between our internal operational and business stakeholders. Ideal candidates are strategic thinkers who develop innovative solutions and work hands-on to understand and solve problems together with customers and partners.

The candidate must set a high bar for quality, possess strong communication skills and use data for continuous improvement. A background in hardware development is required to meet the challenges of advanced operating platforms. A fundamental understanding of building controls and automation is required as the Manager is expected to be technically proficient in the work their team regularly undertakes.

Main responsibilities

• Able to implement and track team goals, report status of ongoing projects upwards
• Experienced interviewer, able to develop launch plans for new hires and identify team needs
• Strong writing skills, able to express thoughts clearly and concisely
• Understanding: electrical diagrams, control diagrams, building operations, control circuits, industrial packaging and labeling machines
• Ability to identify customer needs to help develop project scope and specifications and manage scope of work in relation to site specifications and customer needs
• Ability to manage project engineering to determine scope of work in relation to design intent of customer needs
• Ability to read and interpret specifications and implement these specifications as they apply to the work environment
• Development of logic diagrams in the International Automation format for complex logic devices such as Programmable Logical Controller and Distributed Control System
• Work individually and as part of a team to develop new products, support existing products, test and evaluate equipment
• Coordinate project work internally within the department and externally with other departments to ensure timely completion of projects within budget

About the team Mechatronics & Sustainable Packaging (MSP) delivers innovative solutions for Amazon's fulfillment network, focusing on automation in packaging, labeling and sorting. The team works on secure integration into brownfield and greenfield deployments and leads Amazon's packaging strategy with a focus on sustainability.

Basic requirements

• Diploma in Computer Science, Automation Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, System Development or other related technical degrees
• 4+ years of experience managing engineering teams
• 8+ years of Controls related experience
• Experience recruiting, promoting, coaching, leading and developing teams of engineers
• Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the entire software/hardware development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source code management, build processes, and testing
• Experience working with product or program management teams
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, and must be able to use data to drive improvements within their team

Desired qualifications

• Experience communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to gather requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
• Experience recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching, and managing teams of System Dev Engineers to enhance their skills and make them more effective product developers
• Codesys PLC programming experience
• Experience with AWS Cloud infrastructure
• Willing to travel nationally and internationally
